Abingdon Medical Museum was established in August of 2010, with the goal of educating and informing the public about the history of medicine. The museum is located in the old Abingdon Ambulance Service building near the former Johnston Memorial Hospital, in the Historic District of Abingdon. It is housed in a 110 years old building which was built by a Civil War veteran. The museum maintains exhibits of medical artifacts from the early nineteenth century up to the present day, and focuses on the history of medicine, especially as it relates to southwest Virginia. Through our exhibits and public events, we hope to provide the general public with a better understanding of medicine, and create a unique educational experience that further enriches the cultural environment of the region.

The Museum of the Middle Appalachians offers a view of the natural and cultural history of the region. The William King Museum is a non-profit regional art museum and arts education center housed in a historic 1913 former school. It is the only facility of its kind and Virginia's only nationally accredited museum west of Roanoke. An average of 9 exhibitions are mounted each year, showcasing art of the region and of the world. Programming includes artist talks, lectures, workshops, and other special events. Two additional galleries include the Student Gallery, which displays works from area schools and colleges, and the Panoramic Gallery that features self-curated shows by local artists.
